One fine Saturday, we went on a little afternoon adventure – up to Auburn, CA to taste some delectable beers at Knee Deep Brewing! We love their beers and this was our first time there. It’s about an hour and 45 from where we live in the Bay Area near San Francisco, but it would also be a close day trip if you live or are visiting the Sacramento area.
Knee Deep is located in an industrial warehouse building near the airport. On this particular day, it was really warm and the brewery was super crowded! We had to grab a table outside since all of the tables inside were full, and just tolerate the heat. Luckily, we had good beers and Jenga!
Here is a list of beers we tried:
- Summer Sipper: Their experimental double IPA – delightfully hoppy and refreshing on a very warm day. I think this was pretty much our favorite. Crossing our fingers that they bottle it up soon!
- Aviator #8: This was the second experimental beer that we tried and it was pretty tasty, but I still enjoyed the Summer Sipper a bit better.
- Midnight Hoppiness: This one is an imperial dark rye IPA. This was my second favorite. The best way I can describe it is that it’s sort of like a hoppy porter. Normally, I tend to gravitate towards the IPA-styled beers rather than the darker ones like porters and stouts, but this is a good creation that I would definitely drink again!
- Lupulin River: An IPA that they bottle currently. Another hoppy beer, slightly less piney than the Summer Sipper.
If you can find Knee Deep Bottles near you, and you enjoy hoppy beers, I would definitely recommend picking up a bottle of Breaking Bud (hehe…yep…Breaking Bad inspired!).
Knee Deep doesn’t have a restaurant that serves food, but they do have a schedule of food trucks that are onsite! When we were there, Tokyo Fro’s was providing the grub and they were selling sushi, Asian sliders, etc. They even obliged and made a delicious vegetarian avocado and cucumber roll for me! Didn’t feel like eating fish that day.

After we had our afternoon beer time, we headed into downtown Auburn which is a totally cool, historic looking town! It was quite busy there, but we had dinner at the Auburn Brewing Company. The food was so-so – Micah liked his jamalaya and I had a portobello sandwich that had a sundried tomato pesto on it. Would I eat there again? Hmmm. I don’t know. I might be more interested in checking out some of the other restaurants nearby!
All in all, we had a good afternoon beer adventure!
